Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment director Chris Field spoke with Lynn Orr, who served as Under Secretary for Science and Energy at the U.S. Department of Energy from December 2014 to January 2017. Read excerpts from their conversation on Medium, or watch the full video.

Lynn Orr was the founding director of the Precourt Institute for Energy at Stanford from 2009 to 2013. He was also the founding director of Stanford’s Global Climate and Energy Project from 2002 to 2008 and dean of the School of Earth, Energy, & Environmental Sciences from 1994 to 2002.  Orr discussed his role in the creation of a number of innovative projects at Stanford that supported dynamic engagement across different disciplines and sectors. He also explained his role at the Department of Energy and the key differences between leadership in the public versus academic sectors.
